Alappuzha, an exotic backwater site fringed with swaying coconut palms, has rightfully earned the sobriquet, “Venice of the East”. Labyrinth of lagoons, lakes and freshwater rivers criss-cross the whole city area, making it an attractive destination for the people from far and wide. Apart from the various tourist attractions within the city, there is plenty to see and visit nearby too. The following are some of the most visited destinations near Alappuzha.

Kochi


Kochi

Kochi or Cochin, as it was previously known, is a beautiful maritime place that exhibits a pleasant blend of the colonial past with the modern India. There are many prominent tourist destinations in the city which include St. Francis Church, Mattancherry Palace, Pareekshith Thampuran Museum, Chedamangalam Fort, Gundu Island and more. It is also famous for its handicrafts that are made out of wood, coir, bamboo, shells and more.

Thrissur, formerly known as Trichur, is the fourth largest city of Kerala. Due to its spiritual, cultural and religious leanings through the whole history, it is also known as the “Cultural capital of Kerala”. Some of the well-known tourist destinations in the city include Kerala Lalitha Kala Academy, Thiruvambadi Sree Krishna Temple, Vaddakumnathan Temple and Paramekkavu Temple as well as two well-known churches, Our Lady of Dolours Syro Malabar Catholic Basilica and Our Lady of Lourdes Syro Malabar Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral.

It is situated at a distance of 132 km from Alappuzha and one usually takes 2 hours 32 minutes to reach this place via road. If you wish to commute in a comfortable and affordable manner, then opt for a private or state owned (KSRTC) bus. The other way to reach this town more comfortably is by hiring a private taxi or a cab.

Kottayam

Kottayam, located in the central Kerala is the administrative capital of the state. It has earned the sobriquet “Akshara Nagari” as it is the first city in India that has achieved 100% literacy in 1989. There are plenty of destinations that are worth visiting in Kottayam including the famous Vembanad Lake, Mozart Art Gallery, Pallippurathu Kavu Bhagavathy Temple, Vagamon, Aruvikkuzhi Waterfall, Poonjar Palace, Thazhathangady Jume Masjid and more.

Kollam

Kollam or Desiganadu or Quilon is a sea port city has a very good reputation in terms of commerce since the days of the Romans and Phoenicians. It has plenty of tourist attractions that invite people from far and wide. Some of them are the Kollam Beach, Thangassery Beach, Fort and Lighthouse, Asramam Picnic Village, Adventure Park and Thirumullavaram Beach etc. It is well connected to all parts of the city via road, rail and airways.

The best way to reach Kollam from Alappuzha is by road. It is situated at a distance of mere 85 km which can be covered in around 1 hour 40 minutes when travelling by bus or a taxi.

Aluva

Previously known as Aluwaye, Aluva is located on the Periyar River. Being home to the Travancore royal family during the summer months, it is also famous for the Alwaye Palace and the Shivratri festival which is celebrated annually at the riverbanks of Periyar. It is famous for the various destinations such as Aluva Masjid, Sree Krishna Temple, St. Dominic Church, Adwaitha Ashram, Pottachira Sree Krsihna Temple, Kunjunnnikara Juma Masjid, etc.

It is well connected to the other cities with different modes of transport like the railways, roadways and airways etc. Being located at a distance of 72 km from Alappuzha, it can be reached in around 1 hour 25 minutes by taking a bus or a cab.

Kodungallor

Kodungalor or Cranganore is one of the most important sea ports of this side of the world. It is home to the oldest mosque in India, the Cheraman Juma Masjid which was constructed during the lifetime of Muhammad. Apart from that, the other famous tourist spots in Kodungallor include Kodungallor Fort, Muziris Heritage Project, Kodungallor Bhagavathy Temple, Mar Thoma Syro Malabar Catholic Church, Thiruvanchikulam Mahadeva Temple, Chirakkal Kovilam, Puthen Kovilam etc.

Located at a distance of 89 km from Alappuzha, one will take around 1 hour 50 minutes to reach this place by road. The road network is really good and there are many private and state operated buses that ply on this route which will provide affordable commutation.

Irinjalakuda

Irinjalakuda, a municipal town in Thrissur, was created by the sage Parasuram according to the Hindu factology. The name has been derived from two words that mean merging of two streams. Some of the important places to visit in Irinjalakuda are Koodalmanikyam Temple, Agastya Temple, Shiva Temple, Avittathur Temple, Bhagavathy temple, Ayyappa Temple, Narasimhamoorthy Temple, Krishna Temple Mary Maculin Church, Avittathur Church and more.

It is located at a distance of around 115 km from Alappuzha and can easily be reached in 2 hours 12 minutes when travelling by road. One can travel by a bus or hire a private taxi for more convenience.
