Backwater Cruise

The highlight of Alappuzha is the backwater cruises that take you around serene waters of Kerala. There are daily boat cruises operating by DTPC and these ferry rides would take about 8 hours to travel. The backwater area of the Vembanad Lake happens to be one of the largest with an area of 200 km which opens out to the sea. The ecosystem is also unique with wide variety of species like crabs, frogs, birds and many other aquatic animals.

Alappuzha Beach

The Alappuzha is an ideal picnic spot with your family amidst the cool breeze from sea and lush green trees surrounding it. Near the beach you have the Vijaya Park which has some interesting games for children. It also has boating facilities too.

Touring Alappuzha in a houseboat is a completely different experience. In earlier times these boats also known as kettuvallams or rice boats were used to transport rice and other commodities to nearby towns. But today these boats have been transformed as boat houses accommodating tourists. They vary in sizes with a length of 95 feet long and width of 13 feet while bigger ones measure 107 feet in length and 19 feet width. They come equipped with all facilities and even have generators for supplying power. They have kitchens, dining rooms, air-conditioned bedrooms all to suit the needs of the tourists.

This small stretch of land is known for its green paddy fields and the simple rural lifestyle of the villagers here. Enriched with lakes and canals this place is ideal for vegetation. Manimala, Pampa and Achancovil are some of the major rivers that flow here.

The Nehru Trophy Boat Race happens every year at the Punnamada Lake which is situated near Alappuzha. Known as Vallam kalli this race is played with all the competition and spirit. This sport has been named after Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and it occurs every year in month of August.

Best Time to visit Alappuzha

It’s best to avoid visiting Alappuzha during the summer and rainy season. Alappuzha experiences heavy showers between the months of June-September. The climate is pretty humid due to its nearness to the sea. Summer season falls in the month of March and April with temperature reaching a maximum of about 32 °C (95°F). So the apt time would be between September to March which also happens to be the peak time for boat cruises.

Road
Alappuzha is well connected by roads, rail, air and water transports. Both private as well as state run KSRTC bus services run through and fro city. Major cities like Chennai, Coimbatore, Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam can be reached through the NH-47 highway.

Boats and jetty services is another common means of transport for the common man in Alappuzha. You can even opt to go to the towns like Kottayam and Kollam through the jetty services. Opposite to the KSRTC bus stand is the SWTD boat jetty that will take you around this town.
